Istanbulkart vs. Istanbul City Card: which one should you get?

For most visitors the Istanbulkart (pay-as-you-go, also called the Istanbul Card) is the cheaper choice; the Istanbul City Card only pays off if you plan to take 20+ rides a day. Both cards work on metro, tram, bus, ferry, and funicular, but the Istanbulkart charges per tap while the City Card bundles unlimited rides into a 1, 3, 5, 7, or 15-day pass.

Is the Istanbul City Card worth it?

The Istanbul City Card is rarely worth it for tourists. A standard Istanbulkart ride costs ₺42, and the 1-Day City Card costs ₺795, so you'd need 23 rides in a single day to break even. For a 3-day pass at ₺1,530, the break-even is about 15 rides per day. Even a packed sightseeing day rarely exceeds 6 to 8 rides.

For most tourists the Istanbulkart is the cheaper card. The City Card only pays off if you want the convenience of skipping top-ups and don't mind paying a premium for it.

Despite some marketing claims, the Istanbul City Card is an unlimited transit card only. The card does not reliably include museum entry, Bosphorus cruises, or skip-the-line access. Don't buy it expecting attraction perks.

Istanbulkart in detail

Istanbul Card (Istanbulkart)

The Istanbulkart has been around for many years and is the standard way locals and tourists get around Istanbul. You load credit and pay per ride.

How to buy an Istanbulkart

  • Istanbul airports (IST and SAW): Look for the booths and yellow Biletmatik machines in the arrivals area. Buying at the airport is the easiest option, right when you land.
  • Metro and tram stations: Yellow Biletmatik vending machines at most stations.
  • Streetside kiosks: Small shops near busy transit stops often sell them.

The card costs ₺165 to purchase. You then load credit on top of that.

How to use an Istanbulkart

  • Tap your Istanbulkart on the card reader at the turnstile or inside the bus.
  • One card can cover up to 5 passengers, tapping once per person. Be careful on distance-based lines like the Marmaray: the system calculates your fare at exit, and the refund only applies to the last person who tapped. If 3 people share one card on the Marmaray, 2 of them will pay the maximum fare.
  • Children under 6 ride for free and don't need a card.

Top-up limits

  • Maximum balance per card: ₺300
  • Monthly top-up limit: ₺500 per calendar month
  • You can only load up to ₺300 per transaction at Biletmatik machines. Once you've loaded a total of ₺500 in a month, you can't add more until the next month. You'd need to buy a new card.

No transfer discounts for tourists

In 2026, only personalized Istanbulkarts (linked to a Turkish ID or foreigner residence permit) receive transfer discounts. As a tourist with an anonymous card, you pay full fare for every single tap. No discount applies when you transfer between metro, tram, and bus within a time window.

The mobile app

The Istanbulkart has a mobile app that lets you pay via QR code, load balance, and top up your physical card using a credit card.

App StoreGoogle Play StoreHuawei App Gallery

The app requires a +90 Turkish phone number, with no workaround. If you have a Turkish number, the app is the easiest way to top up your Istanbulkart by credit card and skip the Biletmatik queue. If you don't have a Turkish number, stick to the physical card and top up at Biletmatik machines.

Istanbul City Card

The Istanbul City Card gives you unlimited rides on all public transportation (metro, tram, bus, ferry, funicular) for a fixed number of days.

How to buy the City Card

The best place to get your Istanbul City Card is at the airport when you arrive. Look for the Istanbul City Card booths or Biletmatik machines in the arrivals area. You can also buy it online, but no reliable hotel delivery service exists, so you'll still need to pick it up somewhere.

How to activate the City Card

The card activates on first use. Your 1, 3, 5, 7, or 15-day countdown begins the moment you tap it at your first turnstile, so you can buy it at the airport without burning a day of validity before you're ready to ride.

What about contactless bank cards?

Contactless Visa or Mastercard tap works at some Istanbul turnstiles with no transit card needed, but the bank-card fare runs roughly 50% higher than the Istanbulkart fare. Coverage has expanded in 2026, but it is not available system-wide yet.

Expect around ₺50–₺65 per ride with a contactless bank card, compared to ₺42 with an Istanbulkart. You also get no transfer discounts, so every tap is charged full price. Some lines (for example, the Marmaray) may not support contactless reliably.

  • For 1 or 2 rides (for example, airport to hotel): Contactless tap is fine if you don't mind paying the premium.
  • For regular use: Get an Istanbulkart. You'll save on every ride and avoid surprises at turnstiles that don't support bank cards.

What about the Türkiye Kart?

The Türkiye Kart is a new national transit card designed to work across all Turkish cities. As of 2026, the local Istanbulkart is still the most reliable and widely accepted option in Istanbul, especially for ferries and Marmaray trains. Stick with the Istanbulkart for now.

Frequently asked questions

Which card is cheaper for tourists?

The Istanbulkart is almost always cheaper. You pay ₺165 for the card plus ₺42 per ride. Most tourists take 4 to 6 rides per day. The cheapest City Card (1 day) costs ₺795, which requires 23 rides to break even.

Can I use one Istanbulkart for my whole family?

Yes, one card works for up to 5 people — tap once per person at the turnstile. But avoid sharing on distance-based lines like the Marmaray, where only the last person to tap gets the correct exit fare. For families, carrying 2 Istanbulkarts is safer.

How do I activate the Istanbul City Card?

Just tap it at any turnstile. The validity period (1, 3, 5, 7, or 15 days) starts counting from your first tap, not from when you bought it.

Can I tap my credit card instead of buying a transit card?

Yes, contactless Visa and Mastercard work at some Istanbul turnstiles. But coverage isn't universal, so if you're planning more than a couple of rides, get an Istanbulkart.

I don't have an Istanbulkart. What are my options?

You can use contactless bank cards at supported turnstiles, buy limited-use tokens (1, 3, 5, or 10 rides) from Biletmatik machines, or download the Istanbulkart mobile app (may need a Turkish phone number).
