Istanbul Airport to City Center: Metro, Bus & Taxi Guide (2026)

Landed at Istanbul Airport (IST) and wondering how to get to the city? There are three main options: the M11 metro, Havaist shuttle buses, and taxis. This guide covers all of them with 2026 fares, step-by-step directions, and recommendations by destination.
2026 Quick Comparison
| Mode | Best For | Cost (Approx.) | Time |
| 🚇 Metro (M11 + M2) | Budget travelers, no luggage | ~€1.50 | ~60–75 min to Taksim |
| 🚌 Havaist Bus | Comfort, direct routes | 420–480 TL (~€8.40–€9.60) | ~90–120 min |
| 🚕 Taxi / Ride-Share | Door-to-door, groups | 2,100 TL (~€42) | ~45–75 min |
| 🚐 Private Transfer | Families, late arrivals | €40–60 | ~60 min |
Private transfers: Transfer companies are not allowed inside the terminal. After exiting arrivals, head outside to Gate 14 where representatives wait with name signs at the meeting point.
Our pick: For most first-time visitors arriving with luggage, Havaist is the most comfortable and hassle-free option.
🚌 Havaist Shuttle Buses (Recommended)
Havaist runs 24/7 direct coach services from Istanbul Airport to major city destinations. You pay by tapping a contactless credit or debit card — no ticket or Istanbulkart needed.

Where to Board at Istanbul Airport
Havaist buses depart from Floor -2 (arrivals level), accessible via escalators near Gates 10–14. Look for the large blue buses with the Havaist logo. Departure screens show each destination with a column number (e.g., column 11 for Sultanahmet) — go to the matching numbered platform to wait for your bus.
Schedule
- Daytime (05:00–00:00): Every 30 minutes
- Nighttime (00:00–05:00): Every 45–60 minutes (24/7 service)
How to Get to Taksim by Havaist
Take HVL-9. The bus stops at Beşiktaş, Zincirlikuyu, and 4. Levent before dropping you at Point Hotel in Taksim Square. İstiklal Avenue is a 2-minute walk from there.
How to Get to Sultanahmet by Havaist
Take HVL-1 to Aksaray Metro, then board the T1 towards Kabataş for two stops to Sultanahmet. Total journey: ~2 hours. Also check the departure screens for a direct Sultanahmet line (HVİST-11, column 11) — it has been running more regularly since mid-2025, though availability can vary.
For the full step-by-step route, see our dedicated Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet guide.
🚇 Metro: M11 (U Line) from Istanbul Airport
The metro is the cheapest option and unaffected by traffic — but it requires transfers and is tiring with heavy luggage.
Getting to the Metro at Istanbul Airport
From the arrivals hall, follow the signs for "Metro (U)" near Gates 12–14 and head to Exit 13. The walk takes about 5–10 minutes.
M11 Operating Hours
06:00 to 00:00 daily (no metro service between midnight and 6am).
Cost & Payment
- Fare: ~€1.50 per ride
- Requires an Istanbulkart or a contactless credit/debit card. You cannot pay cash at the turnstiles. Istanbulkart vending machines ("Biletmatik") are available at the metro station inside the terminal.
Avoid the turquoise PTT machines. You'll see turquoise-colored vending machines near the metro entrance — these sell single-use cards that only work on the airport metro line and are useless for the rest of your trip. Instead, look for the yellow/blue Biletmatik machines and buy an Istanbulkart, which works on all metros, trams, buses, and ferries across Istanbul.
How to Get to Taksim by Metro
- Board the M11 at Istanbul Airport
- Ride 6 stations (~30 min) to Gayrettepe
- Transfer to M2 (towards Yenikapı direction)
- Ride 3 stops to Taksim station
Total time: ~45–50 minutes (plus walking/transfer time)
How to Get to Sultanahmet by Metro
The route to Sultanahmet involves 2 transfers and is not recommended with heavy luggage. If you're going to Sultanahmet, take Havaist HVL-1 instead (see above).
If you prefer the metro:
- M11 → Gayrettepe (~30 min, 6 stations)
- Transfer to M2 towards Yenikapı → ride to Vezneciler - İstanbul Ü. station
- Walk to the nearby T1 → board at Laleli - İstanbul Ü. towards Kabataş
- Get off at Sultanahmet station
See our Istanbul Airport to Sultanahmet guide for the full breakdown.
How to Get to Kadıköy by Metro
There is no practical metro-only route from IST to Kadıköy. The journey requires multiple bus and rail changes which is exhausting and time-consuming. Take Havaist HVL-6 (120 min) or a taxi instead.
🚕 Taxi & Ride-Share
Taxis are the most direct option — available 24/7, door-to-door, and especially practical for late arrivals or groups.
2026 Taxi Fares from Istanbul Airport
The fares below are all-in estimates including bridge and highway tolls. Note that the taxi meter itself does not include tolls — if the driver takes a toll road (common during heavy traffic), they may ask you to cover the toll fee separately on top of the metered fare.
| Destination | Fare Range | Travel Time |
| Taksim | 1,803–2,366 TL (~€36–47) | ~45–60 min |
| Sultanahmet | 1,883–2,473 TL (~€38–49) | ~45–60 min |
| Beşiktaş | 1,783–2,340 TL (~€36–47) | ~40–55 min |
| Kadıköy | 2,620–3,436 TL (~€52–69) | ~60–75 min |
Taxi Tips
- Always ask the driver to turn on the meter before departure.
- Official taxi stands are located outside near Gate 14. There's a price board at the stand showing average fares by district — drivers cannot charge significantly more than the listed estimates.
- Use BiTaksi (preferred by locals) or Uber — both call standard yellow taxis and offer upfront fare estimates. Note: there are no private UberX cars in Turkey; both apps dispatch regular metered taxis.
- Add extra time during rush hours (08:00–10:00 and 17:00–19:00).

| Option | Available After Midnight? |

📝 Important Notes
- Istanbulkart is required for the metro. Get one at the Biletmatik vending machines inside the terminal's metro station. Contactless credit/debit cards also work at turnstiles but cost more per ride.
- Traffic: Avoid taxis and buses during rush hours (08:00–10:00 and 17:00–19:00) if possible — the metro is unaffected.
- Currency: Havaist fares are in Turkish Lira (TL). Contactless card payment is accepted; cash is not.
- IST vs. SAW: This guide is for Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side. If you flew into Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW), see our SAW to city center guide.
